We are not Boomers

Dear Teacher,

I am writing to voice my objection to something you reportedly said in a recent history class. You apparently said something to the effect that people born in the 60’s are Boomers.  On behalf of about 5.2 billion of us, I would like to help correct that misinformation for you.

Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964. The tail end of that generation ended before the ‘60s were half baked (see what I did there?). The rest of the people born in the 60’s and 70’s are entirely GenX.

Our parents were “Baby Boomers” and the tail end of “The Silent Generation”. We have been trying to fix the world for 50 years, but we had to figure out how to survive first, because they basically left us alone with a key to the front door and a dime to drop in a pay phone in case we needed to call an ambulance.

Yes, the meme is accurate. Our parents basically let us run free until the streetlights came on and I have the scars to prove it. But in the process of dealing with all that trauma, we invented the Canadarm, Grunge, Google, World Central Kitchen and the Linux Operating System. You’re welcome.

Please don’t mischaracterize us as the very thing we have been fighting against our entire lives.

Sincerely, GenX
